Rachael Travaille
Saxophonist

  • 1. Name: Rachael Travaille

  • 2. Role in the Band: Saxophone shreddage

  • 3. Hometown: The mighty Ōtautahi

  • 4. Favorite Bands/Influences: A lot of stoner rock like Kyuss, Clutch etc, fav band Swedish death metal Opeth. Also getting into a lot of minimal house and techno such as Swoy, Traumer, Silat Beksi, and starting to produce a colab EP with local legend Patella. I'm jazz trained so went through the music school at Ara, and that got me into a lot of fusion like Snarky Puppy and straight ahead jazz, as well as dabbling in middle eastern (top two in my opinion) performer/composer Anouar Brahem (Tunisia) and Rabih Abou Khalil (Lebanon) who fuse jazz and traditional folk music seemlessly.

  • 5. Favorite Song to Play Live: One of the down and dirty ones with the killer riffs that sound like I'm playing in Clutch. Stir the Pot for example

  • 6. Signature Move/Performance Style: Standing there with a silly grin because I'm having fun

  • 7. Dream Collaboration: To be honest, if Clutch wanted to have a horn record with them, I'd jump at that. I also have a secret wish to collab with Kaya Project. My partner maaay have drunk-texted one of the KP crew about it one night.....

  • 8. Favorite Tour Story/Moment: The most rockstar feeling in my life was having to headline a show while knowing that the only other person on stage had been told they were going to be gunned down that night at the performance. I was the only other person going to be on stage under the spotlight with them. Looking back it was quite scary.

  • 9. Favorite Food: I have so many. Hollandaise sauce. Liquorice. The runny part of the egg. Aniseed wheels. Mum's mince stew.

  • 10. Guilty Pleasure Song/Artist: Type 0 Negative. I cried when Peter Steele died because I'd never see him play live. Probably the sexist musian ever. RIP

  • 11. Favorite Saying or Quote: I'm warming to the quote "Seek Discomfort" by the YesTheory crew though the idea is terrifying

  • 12. Most Embarrassing Stage Moment: I got a new neckstrap for my saxophone and didn't notice it unbuttoning all my shirt buttons at a gig

  • 13. Favorite Hobby Outside of Music: Taxidermy, I'm not very good but it's fun

  • 14. Favorite Piece of Gear: The Otto Link metal mouthpiece, the higher gauge the sweeter it gets

  • 15. If You Weren't a Musician, What Would You Be?: Probably a wolf biologist or zookeeper. Something to do with animals and birds. I've already got chickens and pet pigeons.

Rachael Travaille is the incredibly talented saxophonist of Scrooge, bringing over two decades of experience and a wealth of musical expertise to the band. A graduate of jazz school, Rachael has played in numerous bands throughout the years, mastering a wide range of instruments including alto, tenor, and bass saxophones, as well as the clarinet. Her ability to jump into any song after just one listen is invaluable to us, and her unforgettable X-Files solo in our fifth track adds a whole new dimension to our sound. Beyond her musical prowess, Rachael also has a passionate love of animals, a trait that shows her deep sense of care and compassion. We are incredibly lucky to have her as part of the Scrooge family.
